"Hi and welcome to CHOICES... the home of Choi Kwang Do in Malaysia.
For as long as I can remember, my family and I have enjoyed a professional relationship with the global Choi Kwang Do community.
I am fortunate to have started my martial arts journey as a student of Choi Kwang Do at 4 years of age. Choi Kwang Do is not just a sport, it's a lifestyle that includes health, fitness, personal development and self-defense. I learned, as an 8-year-old, when I achieved my 1st Dan black belt, that if I worked diligently, stayed focused on my goals, that over time I can achieve them. Over the past 20 years, I have been fortunate to not only have the home grounding but also to have travelled extensively, receiving guidance and instructions from dedicated international Choi Kwang Do instructors and achieving my 5th Dan black belt..
In 2010, my mother and 6th Dan black belt, "Debz'" Rafferty founded and established the very first Choi Kwang Do school in Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. In 2015, my mum returned to Scotland and I am fortunate to be able to take over as owner and Master Instructor of the CHOICES Choi Kwang Do school and dojangs here in Malaysia.
Why CHOICES? The first four letters spell out CHOI and is in recognition of the founder of CHOI KWANG DO (Grand Master Kwang Jo Choi). For me the essence of this Martial Art is embedded in the word CHOICES. When confronting life’s challenges, whether emotional, intellectual or physical, Choi Kwang Do has always equipped me with the choices of how best to meet those challenges. Life is far more rewarding when you have CHOICES.
Choi Kwang Do
From Taekwondo to Choi Kwang Do
The martial arts of Taekwondo and Choi Kwang Do have a shared heritage. In 1963, Taekwondo was introduced into much of South East Asia by Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi. Grandmaster Kwang Jo Choi was a former South Korean Taekwondo National Champion and one of the Original Masters of the Korean Taekwondo Association.
While teaching and demonstrating Taekwondo in South East Asia, Grandmaster Choi became injured. Medical experts ascertained that the injuries were caused by the physical demands of Taekwondo.
Whilst maintaining the principles of Taekwondo, Grandmaster Choi added a range of exercises and techniques designed to enhance rehabilitation and offer protection from injuries.
Then in 1987, Grandmaster Choi introduced Choi Kwang Do to the world.
Today, Choi Kwang Do is the complete martial art and fitness discipline that offers a range of programs designed to be age appropriate.
Our Programs
CHOICES Training Programs
One of the crucial points of difference between Choi Kwang Do and other martial arts are the choices and structure of programs available. This is not a one size fits all regime. Each program has been designed to maximize the benefits to the individual student, not just age and physicality appropriate but emotionally and intellectually matched to ensure each student progresses on their own life's journey to the best they can be.
Mini Ninjas
3 - 6 years old
Uniquely suited to the powerful imaginations and short attention spans of preschoolers.
Young children lay the foundation for future success by developing focus, self-discipline and confidence.
Adults
18 years old & above
Our internationally certified instructors are expert in coaching practical self-defense skills as part of a fun work-out while managing pre-existing injuries in our community of adults.
Kids
6 - 12 years old
CHOICES’ small group classes for children build self-defense skills and nurture the development of good character.
CHOICES’ children's classes are a cardio workout that gamifies self-defense skills and develops concentration, self-discipline and confidence.

The family and siblings classes are designed to allow families or siblings to train together.

Teens
13 - 17 years old
CHOICES’ Teens sessions are a space for teenagers to develop life skills in
self-defense, communication and body awareness.
CHOICES’ Teens classes are upbeat, fun and energetic. Teens can release stress, burn energy and have a positive and healthy environment to socialize in.
Zero2Hero Camp
Mixed age group
This camp is designed for those unable to commit to a weekly class or looking for a holiday camp.
The self defense crash course helps in building self-confidence while providing the opportunity to develop skills faster with in-built anti-bullying drills and simulations.
